British American Tobacco aims for £5bn revenues from ‘next generation’ products

British American Tobacco has set out plans to generate £5bn in revenue and "substantial profit" from so-called "next-generation" products including e-cigarettes by 2022.

The news comes on the same day that MPs launched an inquiry into the devices and their impact on public health.

Tobacco giants are scrambling to scoop up a share of the e-cigarette market as consumers have ditched cigarettes in favour of purportedly safer alternatives.

BAT, which owns the Lucky Strike and Rothmans brands, said its tobacco heating product Glo was achieving "excellent growth" in Japan, where it was launched two weeks ago. Its next generation products should break even by the end of next year, it said.
